The Case Study of Vanitas, Chapter 6 by: Jun Mochizuki

My Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

Jun Mochizuki, acclaimed creator of PandoraHearts, continues her epic adventure tale, The Case Study of Vanitas!
Showing up without an invitation, an old friend of Noe’s appears and…collars him?! Vanitas can’t very well let his companion up and disappear, but where exactly are his quarry headed??

Find out what happens in the sixth installment of Jun Mochizuki’s latest epic adventure tale, The Case Study of Vanitas, the same day as Japan!

Beware spoilers ahead!

After finishing the last chapter I was eager to read this one. I am happy to say that I enjoyed this chapter!

The chapter begins where the last one left off. Noe is doubling over in pain and says that he indeed did see the Charlatan. Dominique a woman claiming to be Noe’s fiancee enters. Noe reveals that he isn’t engaged to Dominique and that she is a childhood friend. Dominique then takes Noe with her leaving Vanitas.

When Noe asks why she came after him she explains that it is because she was worried about Noe. As readers have already seen Noe is absolutely clueless and very child-like. Dominique thinks that Vanitas is using Noe for some personal gain. Dominique mentions that she was able to get an invitation to a party so that Noe can have a word with one of the attenders about curse breakers. Eventually Vanitas finds them and goes with them. The chapter ends with Dominique telling Vanitas Noe’s backstory.

The only reason I rated this 3 stars is because I felt that the chapter was too short. When I got to the end I was surprised and assumed that there would be more. But alas I finished it. What I really enjoyed about this chapter was Dominique. I liked her character. And as usual this was funny. What’s interesting is that Dominique is Noe’s teacher’s granddaughter. I’m really looking forward to learning more about Noe’s past in the next chapter!

Overall a good but too short of a read. I recommend this series to people looking for a unique fantasy. And for anyone who is new to reading manga, who would like to start off with fantasy.

The Case Study of Vanitas, Chapter 5 by: Jun Mochizuki

My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

Jun Mochizuki, acclaimed creator of PandoraHearts, continues her epic adventure tale, The Case Study of Vanitas!
Back at Count Orlok’s place, Noe and Vanitas are reunited with a familiar face! But to get what they want, Noe will have to employ a power that no one knew he possessed…
Find out what happens in the fifth installment of Jun Mochizuki’s latest epic adventure tale, The Case Study of Vanitas, the same day as Japan!

Beware spoilers ahead!

After finishing the last chapter I was hoping that this chapter would be better. I am happy to say that this chapter was way better!

The chapter begins with a flashback to Noe’s past. Noe is relaxing when someone approaches him. I’m assuming this someone is his teacher. The man mentions that he has noticed that Noe has not been having any blood. Noe says that it’s not necessary therefore he doesn’t see the point. The man offers up his blood. He also tells Noe that Noe won’t see anything different.

Noe wakes up from his dream and Vanitas appears at his window. The two eat breakfast together and decide to visit the Count and check on Amelia. Upon arriving the Count says that Amelia is free to go but he will be watching all of them. Vanitas then asks Amelia some questions.

This chapter was more interesting. We get a little bit about Noe’s past. And the type of vampire he is. When Vanitas questions Amelia you do find out how the vampires realize that they’ve become a curse bearer. Which was interesting.

The chapter was really short. Noe uses his abilities to help Amelia. And it ends with a person from Noe’s life coming in. I would really like to see this teacher of his. It seems that his teacher is everywhere and is going to play a significant role. Hopefully we’ll find out even more information on Noe’s past.

Overall this was a really good chapter! I recommend this to anyone looking for a unique fantasy series.

The Case Study of Vanitas, Chapter 4 by: Jun Mochizuki

My Rating; 3 of 5 Stars

Jun Mochizuki, acclaimed creator of PandoraHearts, continues her epic adventure tale, The Case Study of Vanitas!

Noe and Vanitas’s mission to prove Count Orlok wrong has been rudely interrupted by a surprise showdown with a formidable foe! He may claim to have some tricks up his sleeve, but will Vanitas’s bluster turn out to be all for show against a legendary warrior maiden?!

Read the fourth installment of Jun Mochizuki’s latest epic adventure tale, The Case Study of Vanitas, the same day as Japan!

Beware spoilers ahead!

At the end of chapter 3 Vanitas reveals that he knows a way to defeat the Hellfire witch. I was looking forward to reading this chapter! I enjoyed the action scenes and the revealations in chapter 3. I was so excited for the showdown to begin! I am happy to report that I did enjoy this chapter as well.

The chapter begins where the last one left off. Vanitas has supposedly come up with a plan to defeat the Hellfire witch. While he goes to execute that plan he sends Noe off somewhere else.

While Vanitas fights the Hellfire witch, he talks to her. He manages to break down some of her defenses in a very cruel way. He continues to break down her defenses until she stops fighting. Overwhelmed by strong emotions Vanitas admits that he has feelings for the Hellfire witch.

Meanwhile Dante has just been informed that Luca and the Hellfire witch are looking for the book of Vanitas. Dante realizing that Vanitas is in trouble runs to his aid. He and the two other people watch the fight from the sidelines.

Throughout the interaction with Vanitas and the Hellfire witch you do get a bit more backstory and you really get to understand the relationship with Luca and the Hellfire witch. It was pretty interesting. And Noe’s part comes in pretty quickly.

This chapter was surprisingly short. While the action scenes were interesting, I didn’t really enjoy this chapter as much as the last one. It especially got weird when Vanitas tried proposing to the Hellfire witch. It seems that Vanitas doesn’t understand emotions. The ending was pretty creepy so here’s to hoping the next chapter is better.

Overall this was a good chapter! I recommend this series to anyone whose looking for a new sort of fantasy.

The Case Study of Vanitas, Chapter 3 by: Jun Mochizuki

My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

Jun Mochizuki, acclaimed creator of PandoraHearts, continues her epic adventure tale, The Case Study of Vanitas!

Following the incident on the ship, Noe manages to arrive in Paris–but in jail?! To make matters worse, the eccentric Vanitas is still at his side, and it doesn’t seem like getting rid of him will be easy. What is Vanitas up to, exactly?!

Read the second installment of Jun Mochizuki’s latest epic adventure tale, The Case Study of Vanitas!

Beware spoilers ahead!

After that cliffhanger like ending in the second chapter I was eager this chapter! I really love how each chapter adds a layer to the overall plot and I get to theorize some more!

This chapter picks up right where the second chapter left off. Noe and Vanitas have left the building after meeting that Lord. Vanitas decides to ask where they are going. Noe replies that he has no idea that he’s just walking. The two run into Vanitas’s helper Dante. Dante and Vanitas get in a fight about how Dante never went to save Amelia. Dante retorts that he wasn’t paid to save her. The two fight a bit more and Noe is dragged into the fight. Vanitas and Noe set off to find the Vampire responsible for all this chaos.

Once they leave someone comes to tell Dante Lord Ruthven’s Bourreau is coming after Vanitas. Most likely looking for the book of Vanitas. Dante pales when he hears this and realizes that he can’t do anything to help Vanitas.

I found this chapter to be even more interesting! You do find out who that little boy and the woman are in this chapter. They will definitely have a significant role throughout the series. Readers are shown just how other Vampires view the book of Vanitas. Of course the plot develops more. There was more action in this chapter. And I am definitely looking forward to the fight scene in the next chapter.

Overall this was a really good chapter! I recommend this series for anyone who is looking for a unique fantasy series.

Review: The Case Study of Vanitas, Chapter 2

The Case Study of Vanitas, Chapter 2 by Jun Mochizuki

After I finished the first chapter I was pretty excited to read the second one! I like how because it’s just began I can theorize and try to solve some of the mysteries in this series. I found that this chapter was better than the first!

This manga begins with a flashback featuring Noe and some kid whose also a vampire. Said kid is explaining Noe about the vampires who bear curses. Out of the blue they turn violent and start attacking people. When Noe asks what kind of a curse it is the kid explains that its the Vanitas curse.

Back to the present day Noe asks Vanitas why they are in jail. You are then taken a few days back. Vanitas is still trying to convince Noe to help him in his quest. While Noe decides to pick up his cat and belonging’s that was left behind in all the chaos. When he reaches the police arrives and he collapses.

Back to the jail cell Noe says that Vanitas should’ve been arrested because he was the intruder. Vanitas says that it is true. Noe then asks why he is in jail when he did nothing wrong. Vanitas says that it is because he said that Noe is his accomplice. Vanitas also explains that it is possible that Noe was not in his right mind when retrieving his belongings because he has poison in his system. Noe’s body has spent the last three days fighting the poison.

Vanitas yet again tries to convince Noe to join him. When a guard approaches and releases them. The guard gives them a card and says that they have been summoned. Vanitas then tells Noe that humans tend to erase all vampire related stuff. And that a count with the Queen is the one in charge of handling vampire matters. Said count has summoned them.

I enjoyed this chapter more than I did the first! It seems as each chapter is released the readers find out more about the vampire world. At the end you are also introduced to new characters. This chapter was really funny! Vanitas actually cracked me up a couple of times! Even though he’s insane he’s quite humorous. You do get to delve into Noe’s past a little more. And his personal history with vampires bearing curses. Noe also takes some action in this chapter and I’m excited to see where it leads Vanitas and him to!

Overall this was enjoyable! I recommend it to fans of the author, anyone whose finished the first chapter, and fantasy fans.

Review: The Case Study of Vanitas, Chapter 1

The Case Study of Vanitas, Chapter 1 by Jun Mochizuki

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Fans rejoice! Jun Mochizuki, acclaimed creator of PandoraHearts, returns with the first installment of her latest epic adventure tale, The Case Study of Vanitas!

In a late 19th century Paris plagued by vampires…who is Vanitas, and what secrets does he hold?

Read the first chapter while the ink is still wet!

Beware spoilers ahead!

I had heard about this new manga series through my sister. I was very excited to here that it would be about Steampunk and Vampires! This author is also well known for her former manga series Pandorahearts. Which was brilliant (my sister read it and told me everything)! I am happy to say that the first chapter was pretty good!

Several years before the manga series takes place vampires fought with humans. Surprisingly humans won and ever since then vampires and humans coexist. Vampires are not allowed to attack humans nor have human blood. So far they have existed peacefully.

A man is aboard a high tech looking blimp to Paris. He seems rather excited and explores his surroundings with awe. Just then a woman passes by him and trips. Before she can fall he catches her. They sit together and the woman thanks him. She introduces herself as Amelia. She asks his name and he brilliantly replies his cat’s name.

Amelia does not ask for the mans name again and instead asks whether this is his first time travelling to Paris. He says that it is and that he was raised in a forest. He claims that he has come to Paris for a specific reason. When Amelia inquires about it he says that he is looking for The Book of Vanitas. Legend has it that those who use the book will doom the vampire race. It is essentially cursed.

Amelia is surprised by this and he explains that he doesn’t wish to use it but to see that it exists. It is then shown that two men are on top of a high tech looking blimp (which the man and Amelia are on) and they mention that they are looking for a target. The two men then break into the blimp and it is discovered that Amelia is there target.

This was a good introduction to this series! The legend and vampires are interesting as are the characters. There is a lot of mystery surrounding The Book of Vanitas and I am excited to find out more! The ending was very cliffhanger like. It is written the same way Pandorahearts was. Our main character is recalling all of the events that lead up to the future. The art is really pretty!

I did have some trouble reading this. It’s been a very long time since I read manga’s (Avalon High was my first one) and I kept on paying attention to the words rather than the pictures. Every now and then I would miss the fight scene and have to go back to look at what happened.

Overall this was a good start to a new series! I recommend it to fans of the author and people looking for a new fantasy.
